I just wanted to announce that I heard the egg song for the first time last night

I expected it to be from a Cinnamon Queen, but it was one of the RIRs. We could have eggs within a couple weeks! And congratulations to you Pele!

I just got my first egg! It was laid by Lickin, my black star who is 20 weeks, 2 days old. Interestingly, her sisters who are about 1 week older than she is are still being freeloaders. I will have to have a talk with them.

Thank you everyone, I'm on cloud nine and she's not even mine . Her name is Simone, both momma and baby are almost ready to head home. I'm determined to be an awesome aunt.

So I am happy to report that we got our first egg today!

Now, to be fair, it is from a 20-week old Hyline hen that we brought home yesterday. We are keeping her seperate from the other girls (16 weeks old), and I did show her the nesting boxes, but she went for a cool dirt patch behind the coop while we were out. So I don't know if she does the egg song. Here is a picture I just took of her:



We named her Caramel.

Grats RoaringBravado! It sounds like she was determined to earn her keep right from the get-go. Was it her first egg, or just her first egg for you? It'd be hilarious if she chose her first full day at your place to be her very first laying day too.

Hi Pele,

I'm not sure if it's her first egg or not. It seems a good size, and she is 20 weeks, so I suspect not.

We did witness a short "egg song" today, but when I went out to see if the result was another egg, there wasn't any to be found. We waited and watched all the rest of the afternoon/evening, but if she did lay, she managed to hide it really well....

We'll see what tomorrow brings...

Woo Hoo! Guess who got their first egg today! We think it came from this hen! This Barred Rock is one day shy of 20wks.

It has been a long 5 mos! I could not believe we were so excited! It's a perfect small little guy!

Here's to hoping the other 6 girls start laying soon! Good times!
