First Egg Countdown

I'm so shocked and surprised that it didn't crack when it fell out!
Lucky! How did it taste?

I didn't know we'd be getting blue eggs - so this was super cool.
Awesomesauce! Do you know which hen gave you that? Breed?

i caught her in the act and it was neat to watch!
How lucky is that?! Way to go! Thanks for sharing that cool photo.

My first egg ...... about $400 ...inedible ...but I got one ... WOO WOO!
Chickens... $50... Coop... $300... Feed...$50... Photo of first egg... PRICELESS! Congrats!

I am eagerly awaiting the first egg, but am hoping they don't start while I am on vacation.
Take them with you!

Just an update on our 21week old Hyline hen, who came to us last week already laying. Today was a first - the first time in the nesting boxes, amongst the golf-balls.

She doesn't yet sleep in the coop with the other girls, so while she has been consistent about laying in the morning (except for her first lay with us, around 3pm), it's been in her overnight cage, or in the dust area, or in the coop, but not in the nesting boxes. My husband let the girls out of the coop at 6 this morning, and so my laying gal Caramel had the opportunity to lay in the nesting box, and she took it!

Quote: I have no idea! I have a wyandotte, partridge rock, orpington and australorp. I thought they were all brown layers - so I am happily confused :)

Grats JesseK and Tweetysvoice!! Horray those are some decent sized first eggs! That is hilarious about your blue egg, JesseK. Sometimes the first egg is off-color, so it could be that one of your hen's inkjets just arn't working yet.

Hi, I'm new here. I have 7 hens and no one is laying yet! We got three of them on CL and the guy said they were about laying age. Two we got from a farm and they were born before Easter and the last two were from another farm and are 4-6 months. I just want an egg! We have 2 Barred Rocks, an EE, a Polish, a Sizzle, a Golden Comet and a white Leghorn.

Well I kind of hope her inkjets never start working, because it is one pretty egg :)

Well, I didn’t expect it quite yet as the oldest girls are around 16 weeks, but one of the golden comets came thru. I had just threatened to stop buying chicken treats, and sheepishly brought home another dozen eggs from the store, when hubby found this little beauty. Perfect in shape, light brown, and delicious.

I will try to post a pic of the new egg layer tomorrow. I am pretty sure she is either a golden comet or red sex-linked, even thought she came from the “Cochin bin” at the feed store.

I have 3 Olive eggers that are 16 weeks, a silver laced Wyandotte, and an Australorp (both 13 weeks), two silkies (one twelve weeks, and one 9 weeks), two D'uccles (8 weeks), and one unknown (4 weeks). So I am super excited to get my first egg. I had 4 Silkies that were 16 weeks, but they all turned out to be roosters. =(

I wonder if your Australorp is responsible. Cross your fingers for more blue eggs.

Congrats! That's a very nice looking egg! Thanks to you, I've decided to buy eggs at the farmer's market in the morning. With any luck my oldest girl will lay while I'm away. (Yah, right. LOL)
