First Egg Countdown

Congrats!

The leg coloring has less to do with it than the comb does. Although the slate coloration tells you that your bird is more closely related to the Ameraucana bloodlines than the diluted willow-legged birds. So I guess that's something. My slate-legged EE Iti gives me mint pastel green eggs. She takes the whole Easter thing super serious.

I was just reading that earlobe color is what indicates what color eggs a hen will lay; white earlobe = white eggs, blue or green earlobe = blue or green eggs accordingly and red earlobes = brown eggs. So, I just checked. Both of my EEs have red earlobes. Does this mean I won't get any pretty colored eggs?

Well, I have added to my herd of birds. Found a little black rooster by the mailboxes and someone told me he and another had been there about two days! In this heat! After looking here we decided he looks exactly like a bantam black Cochin rooster. He is so cute and sweet. I have him quarantined in a stall and he jumps up on his little perch and visits with me. Then he makes a little nest talking away, then does that chuttering telling me (or his invisible hens) all about the food he found. He is so sweet!

I honestly didn't know there were miniature chickens until I came on this site. I have miniature horses I raise, I have raised pygmy and Nigerian dwarf goats, our kids got little dwarf rabbits....Now they are going to really tease me on our *mini farm*. The feed store got in mixed bantam chicks that are so cute, and I had to tell myself no, no, no! No need for more chichens. Then this little guy came along.
My hens look three times his size! Is it possible to put him with them later or will they beat up on him? And would I be able to mix bantams with big chickens? And what does mix of bantams mean? Mixed breed or a mix OF breeds? Anyone know?

Poor lil dude, I hate him being so alone lol. His lil crowing is absolutely the cutest tiny sound, he is a mature rooster tho.

The earlobe thing doesnt apply to EEs as they are of mixed genes.

I'm so glad he's been adopted, the poor little tyke. What about the other one? You said there were two. I have all hens and adopted a bantam BLRW after my flock was established, but they were young and she was a little older than the others. They shunned her a little when she first arrived, but she soon found her way in the group. Although she's not even half the size of the others, who have now grown, nobody bosses her around!

Is he in an area next to the hens, where they can see and talk to each other? Might be a good way to start introducing/integrating him to the girls, and alleviate some of his loneliness. I've heard of banty roosters fitting in with LF hens before, but you'll have to get that info from someone who's been in the same situation. Good luck!

I just got a banty frizzle cochin rooster last week. He is a full year older than the rest of my flock, but I really wanted him because he will be an awesome breeder. I have two little cochin girls for him but the other 24 birds in my flock are all large fowl and everyone shares the same living space. Nobody picks on him. In fact, after the first 30 minutes and a bit of kicking and squawking (but nothing serious), it was like he had always been in the flock. Everyone gets along wonderfully now. Little Fancy Pants has even become head of the flock, above my Light Brahma cockerel!! It must be the age difference. But he calls to all the girls when he finds food and is a perfect little gentleman. It may not always go like that, but in my experience putting a new banty among large fowl ended up being just fine.

I have 6 big chickens and 2 banties. We introduced the banties to the big birds and the banties get picked on pretty bad. I think (3 weeks later) it's started slowing down but they don't sleep together at night. The bantams have their own coop within the big chicken house because I don't want anything to happen to them when they are all locked up at night. In the chicken yard they at least have bushes and long grass to hide in if needed.
Good luck with your new little guy!!

And welcome KristinMarie, those are some gorgeous birds!  I really like your EE!

Oops, I meant to post here, but I posted in the other thread. Just wanted to add that my EE with the slate legs started laying yesterday and her eggs aren't blue. They're a muted blue-green, but definitely not that pretty blue I was hoping for.
