First Egg Countdown!!

Dada, BarredRockGirls, and Esupp congratulations on your first egg! So EXCITING!! I am in the First Egg Countdown myself, my flock is 20.5 weeks old and still no eggs! BarredRockGirls, I can't believe yours are laying at 18weeks, how lucky for you! LOL!

I have been noticing strange behavior in one of my barred rock ladies and I am not sure whether she is sick (I hope not) or if she might be getting ready to lay eggs. I have not heard the egg song yet! She is standing around a lot, acting sluggish, kind of squatting down all the time. I felt her hip bones and I could not feel an egg or a hard spot or anything.

She is being very docile, letting me hold her, and not actively vying for treats like usual (she is near the top of the pecking order).

I posted some pictures in this other thread, do you all think this is normal pre-laying behavior? Or possibly illness? :(

Just noticed a few of our Austra White hens have bright red combs! I'm hoping we'll get some eggs soon. Should I start giving them layer feed now or wait until they lay? They're right around 13/14 weeks.

Keep giving them grower feed until they actually start laying. Layer is the same as grower but with more calcium, calcium which they can alternatively gain from oyster shells. Some people buy bulk crushed oyster shells and mix it in with the grower feed.

Personally, I am offering a small dish of oyster shells free choice next to their organic grower feed dish starting at 20 weeks old (not yet laying) and they seem to like it. I plan to always buy grower feed and either mix in real shells myself or offer free choice! :)

Good deal. I feed them some table scraps as well as any veggies we have to cull from the garden along with the feed. I'll have to look for the oyster shells at the co-op.

I am so jealous! It seems like I've been waiting an eternity! I have 1 left at 17 weeks, the neighbors dog got 8 of them left me with 2, Then one day my lovely amercauna hen crowed :/ The rest of mine are 13 weeks so I have a bit of a wait.
