You'll want to clean that wound with warm water and either some nolvasan and water, or dilute iodine and water til it's the color of weak iced tea and use that after the initial water washing. Pat dry. Treat the wounds with neosporin. You'll need to keep her inside so that flies don't blow the wound and lay eggs (if they haven't already). If their larva (maggots) hatch, just reclean (you can smother with honey to suffocate the maggots) and retreat as above.

keep her inside at least 2 days until the area dries over better. Then keep her apart from her flock makes for a while. You can use tweezers to pull out broken feather stubs to help her grow feathers faster if you want.

When after at least a week you try to replace her into the flock, first put two of the middle-range hens from your flock in with her for two days. Then put all three back into the flock, at night. Watch very carefully for pecking. If they peck, you might have to give them LOTS of room or keep her apart a while. Hopefully not. Also coating the area with Blue-cote from the feed store might help (and will treat the wound) for when you put her back.

It's possible she prolapsed if she's expected to lay soon (bright red comb and wattles). If so, she should be on laying feed with free choice oyster shell. If she hasn't had oyster shell, give her one crushed tums in a quickly eaten wettish treat (cooked oatmeal and boiled egg) one day only to boost calcium.

She was isolated as soon as I found her this morning. She was fine last night!

She is about the right age to be an early layer, but she doesnt really have bright red comb/waddles as of yet

I will get her cleaned up in the morning and treat the wounds.

I am pretty sure they are on laying feed now, I will have to check with the guy I got it from to be sure (as I am not buying TSC feed anymore)

I have not yet been feeding oyster shell, I guess I better track some down fast!

The pic doesnt show it real good, but it appears to me it was an egg that broke on laying, and they went after her because of it. It almost looks like the remains of the egg are still hanging out of her.

I had a very busy day today and wasnt able to deal with it as soon as I would have liked.

If you think the remains are egg, then in addition to the above I would get a baster (you'll have to replace it) or something and flush out her cloaca with cool (not warm) water thoroughly to wash out any of the egg shell that might still be in there. It won't hurt if there's not any in there, it could save her life if there is.

If she at all looks anything less than perky the next few days, I'd give her penicillin shots (TSC carries pen - get 3 cc syringes and 18 gauge needles to replace the 25 gauge that those syringes usually come with - PM for instructions on how to use).

Poor mama.

Is it just me, or does that look like an animal attack? Why would egg-binding cause open wounds on the back? And especially if she was OK last night and you found her like this this morning. She could have broken an egg during the attack as well.

Just a thought.

I suspect this was her first egg, and it broke... and the rest of the chickens attacked her.

There are no signs of an outsider being in the coop... not to mention, its Ft Knox. None of the other chickens are harmed... not even the one that got away from me, and spent the night outside!

I am about to go clean her up here in a few minutes, and will get some more pictures. It looks like its a calcium deficiency... as it appears she might have tried to lay another one this morning.

OOO I would love to see more pics. Maybe it's just the angle, but in the first pic the wound goes way above the tail. That's what made me think predator (rat actually). Waing for pics

So here is what we have done so far. Me being very squeamish.... And the wife 33 weeks preggo with twins!! We were able to hose her off with the garden hose on 'shower'. Almost everything rinsed off, and had the appearance of egg. We have also poured a couple rounds of peroxide on her, as you can see in the last pic its still foaming.

Next step is going to be a batch of something with a tums for her to eat. Tomorrow I got to run and get more feed for them anyway, as we are almost out. I will make sure we are now using Layer feed. I will also see if I can round up some oyster shell and make a feeder for them.

Any other ideas?
