I've read about eggs with no shells, but I found our very first egg today, in the middle of the coop, not in a nest, squishy with ants! Ooooh, what to do? My 14 girls are a week under four months old. I was think a couple more weeks until eggs, but now I am worried. I have just started mixing the layer mash in with the grower that they have been on, mixed with oats and flax. I am gradually adding more layer, should I just switch because of higher protien needs? Any advice is helpful, perhaps that is just a random act of soft eggs,,,,,,,,,,,can't guess this is my first time. Thanks!!

from my experience you should get some soon that are solid if the feed is working out okay. i buy my feed from a feed store locally that makes there own. and i give them treats, but another is when they start laying eggs and if you keep some for yourself. crush up the eggshells it is suppose to help with this problem. that is what i was told by some people that have raised chickens for a long time. and i haven't seen one like that in awhile!

I'd keep giving them chick crumbles/growers cumbles until all of them start laying. It won't hurt them, has more protein in it than the layers mix. Most lists I've seen says that they should be on chick food until they are 18-20 weeks anyhow.

The feed I am currently using is about 75% grower, this is about two weeks worth. My plan was to up the layer rations over the next month until they were on it 100%. They are now 17 weeks old. I had been adding oats to fill in during their major growing time, should I stop? They consume quite a bit of oyster shell, is this the same as using actual crushed egg shell? All info is greatly appreciated.
