First egg signs

Hello. I am awaiting my first egg from my hybrid columbine she is 17 and a half weeks old and will apparently start laying at 18 weeks. Does anyone know any signs for chickens to start laying? I am new to this as I have never had chickens younger than 6 months. :)

Welcome to BYC! The first signs are a bright red face, combs and wattles. But you will know you are very close when they squat for you when you lean over them. When they start to squat, the eggs are only days away. The eggs will be in the pipe!!

I hope you start getting those eggs soon! Finding that first egg is THE most egg-citing part of raising chickens!!

My girls have been laying for about 2 months their combs are still not bright red but growing. They all squatted about 2 weeks before laying their first egg.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your hen, hope she starts laying soon! The 18 weeks is usually the early starting point in big flocks, most pullets will probably take a few weeks longer than that to start laying.

Thank you. :) I am so looking forward to her first egg. :) :) :)
 
This young pullet is no where near point of lay. Note the small pale comb and wattles.


The same pullet two months later. She's has continued to develop and grow.


Three weeks later and she's in full lay. Her comb and wattles are nice and red. Note the color of her face. Nice and red, too. She's around 28 weeks.


Please note different breeds of chickens mature at a different age. The pullet in this photo is a Cackle Hatchery Jersey Giant. Her and her sisters were laying by 25 weeks of age.
