First Egg Woohoo

Congrats! I am still waiting for my first egg from my new flock. I have a girl that was hatched clear back in April, and still hasn't laid an egg for me? She is a barn yard mix. I have an Australorp that looks big enough to lay, she is around 5 months. Wonder why they are taking their time?! I love collecting eggs....and eating them.

My black sex linked Dora started laying yesterday!! Such adorable little eggs. I feel like a grandma.

Just had to throw in my two cents on first egg - yippee! Just when your back is turned to! I had not been able to get in the coop for two days (busy) and let the girls out yesterday afternoon and sure enough a smalley brown prize my best hen followed me in making a fuss so I assume it was hers, she is first to do everything sooo.... I'm giving her the glory. How long can eggs sit in fairly warm weather ? I just cleaned it and put in in the frige? Look like the floor on the pen is starting to be made into nests also!

Any replys wound be welcome!

Congrats on your egg Gramakoko! I also want to say- you should enter your coop in the coop contest- its one of the cutest I've seen! I'm not sure if one is going right now, but watch for it- then put your coop in there- it's darling.

Hooray for first eggs! Our Black Star, Azelea gave us her first tiny brown egg this Thursday. My 5-year-old daughter proudly brought it into the house and I screamed! Still waiting for our 2nd...

Well, I kind of got my first eggs today, too! My leghorn has been squawkin' and squattin' for 2 days and I knew yesterday that it would be 24-48 hours at most. Sure enough, I got up this morning, went to let everyone out of the run, and Miss Felipa Leghorn isn't making much noise... so I look around inside. There in the bottom of the run, at my sheer joy and at the same time utter dismay, I find this:

I kept looking around, and there was another one on top of the nesting box shelf where Felipa sleeps, but it had a paper-thin broken shell and a bright BRIGHT yellow/orange yolk. I was thinking, "Dang, I wish that shelf wasn't covered in poop! I'd eat that thing." But alas, it would have probably A) Tasted badly and B) Made me sick, so I opted against the poop-filled egg-poop.

I saved the little paper-thin/rubbery shell thingie, though. I can't wait to show my husband when he gets home!

Haha! That's great....your enthusiasm over it even though it is "defective"
