A few of my hens have developed quite the comb recently. I am so impatiently waiting for my first egg. I opened the nest boxes this week. Any advice as to when theyll be laying from the experts!? Here are some pictures of them today.

Mable. 18 weeks. White leghorn

Madge. 18 weeks. RIR.

Maude. 18 weeks. Red Star. Got her squatting in this pic!

Agree within a week or two you should at least have one start by then.

The anticipation is so life-consuming!

Good luck and I wish you many tasty eggs.

Anytime now. When they start squatting, it's usually within a week or two that they begin laying.
Ditto Dat^^^^

.....and you can check vents and pelvic points

Vent:
Dry, tight, and smaller - usually not laying.
Moist, wide, and larger - usually laying

Pelvic Points 2 bony points(pelvic bones) on either side of vent:
Less than 2 fingertip widths apart usually means not laying.
More than 2 fingertip widths apart usually means laying.
