Here’s a picture of the nesting boxes

Is it too close to the roost?

I don't think they are too close to the roost.
Some curtains hung in front of the boxes will make them more inviting as they add dimness and privacy.
This is how mine are set up. The 2x4 in the upper left corner is my roost.
These nest boxes are obviously well liked! The box these two are in is 12x12. I was surprised when I opened up the back to check for eggs and saw 2 fluffy butts in there.

Those nests are fine, might want to add a board(4-6") across the front so eggs, fake and real, won't get kicked out.

Tho pullets are notorious for making a real mess of the nest bedding at first, that'll stop once they get the hang of it.

Add some fake eggs or golf balls in at least one of the nests, then just be patient...it can take up to a month or so for them to figure things out.

Curtains might make them feel 'safer'(that's what they need) but it also might freak them out.

Hi, just an update,

So my hen as been laying in the nest box for 2 days straight now.
The other girls are looking at her when she goes in so I think they all got the point. I can’t wait for the other 3 to start laying too.
I tried my first egg and it was awesome

Feels good to eat that egg after all the work you put in lol.

Now I just have to find a way of keeping them from freezing when I can’t collect them early in the morning. I’m thinking a heat mat in the nest box.
