I have three chickens, one australorp, one Rhode Island Red, and an Ameracauna. The Ameracauna started laying at 19 weeks and her eggs were blue. Today I saw a brownish egg in the nesting box along with the usual blue egg. Both my black australorp and Rhode Island Red are squatting, singing, and have bright red combs. It has been 23 weeks if that helps...Whose is it?

Pics of the birds?

I am not an eggspert on this subject, but my Australorp lays pale brown eggs and my Rhode Island Red lays a slightly darker colored brown egg. So I am thinking you are getting eggs from your Australorp. In any event, congrats on those first eggs. It was a very eggciting time for me, too.

Congrats!

It could be either bird. For what it's worth, our australorps lay a light brown egg that almost looks pink. Ours have also tended to start around 22 weeks.

I'm not much help in the who-done-it area, but I'm celebrating with you.

We got the first egg from our new flock (Friday will be 20 weeks).

This is from a Black Plymouth Rock.
