First egg

Got my first egg today from my grey peacock hen.Who said you need to heat them in the winter/Mine all outside all year with poly around the entire pen so no drafts can get to them.It is still cold,but I guess it is warm enough for her to lay.Last year she laid her first egg 3/5,so she is a month ahead of schedule.Now the wait for her second egg and fire up the bator.I hope it will operate right with no black growths in it this year.

Good for you, Tony! I hope to have a species of peacock pheasants someday. They are just so beautiful! I doubt Vermont is warm enough in the winter for them though. I'd have to provide some heated shelter....

You get a the same cold I get here in N.H.Maybe a little more wind,but they should be fine.This is the 2nd year I left them outside and they do greatShe even setts on her eggs,how good is that?I got the pair from Mel Royal and he said she will raise young and that she did.She hatched out a pair last year(2011).I have 2 pairs and 3 extra males.I bought a pair and thought they were a pair,but they both turned out to be males.Oh well,I used 1 male with my 1 year old hen and that will give me 2 unrelated pairs.Is anyone in the market for a grey peacock male?I have 2 2011 hatch for sale.I will save the older male and find another unrelated hen,or trade?

Not me but congrats to you on your first egg. Especially those. Here i am in Fl and I dont get any pheasant eggs till March. But thats OK. Im a patient man. Just as long as I get some.

I was out in the pens adding new branches and saw a potential nest. It is behind a hut and branches all nice and lined with straw while the area around it is bare of straw. Maybe it is a sign one of the hens will start laying soon. The winter pens they are in are south facing so they get lots of sunlight
