Are the first eggs normally smaller? My RIR laid her first egg today and it was a lot smaller than normal. The only other eggs I have gotten have been from chickens that have already been laying for a while and they all were normal sized.

Yes, pullet eggs are small - normally MUCH smaller. That's where peewee and small eggs come from.

They have smaller bodies and smaller reproductive systems, hence smaller eggs.

In my experience, the first eggs are slightly smaller than the final eggs that a hen will lay. They should get larger in a couple of weeks.

They will get larger. Mine started laying july/august and started out as a small to medium size egg. Now they are a pretty a large size egg with the odd smaller one and the odd jumbo double yolker.
