I was so excited to get my first eggs this week. I have found 4 in the last three days, and wonder if I could have 2 hens laying or if it is just one. Help me solve the mystery!
On July 2nd I found the first egg right in the nest box where it belongs. On July 3rd I found another identical egg in the same box, and today (the 4th) I found another, same size and color!
Then when I was cleaning out under the perches later today I found another egg underneath the perches. This one is smaller and paler in color. When I first found it I thought that it might be the first egg laid earlier this week and I just missed it, but after noticing that is is not like the others, I wondered, could I have two hens laying?
The trick is I have a mixed flock of heritage breeds who are only 18-19 weeks old (Buff Orp, Australorp, Barred rock, Welsummer, Brahma). I was not expecting eggs from them for a few more weeks. I have one Gold Comet/Red Sexlink who is ~17.5 weeks old, and I am assuming she is the one laying the eggs because she is a hybrid and supposed to lay earlier than the other breeds I have. But for any of my birds, this seems quite early!
Knowing their ages seeing this picture, do you think one hen is laying or two? The three eggs on the right were all found in the nest. The smaller egg on the left was the one under the roost.
