Hi everyone, it's started ~ four of my thirteen eggs externally pipped on day 19. On day 20 at 1:30 a.m. one chick hatched and then I found 2 others when I awoke this morning. By mid afternoon the 4th chick emerged from its shell. It's so exciting I can hardly wait for more to hatch. I have 9 other eggs in the bator. Two have internally pipped, the other 7 look viable, just a little farther behind the others. (the original hatch date is tomorrow 3-21-14) I will just have to wait and see. Here is a picture of my current babies.

Most people feed chicks medicated starter for 6 to 8 weeks. They need to build a immunity to cocci while they are on it and they need to be exposed to outside dirt while they are getting the medicated feed. Some people will add a small amount of dirt/poop from their chickens run to the brooder after the chicks have been on the medicated feed for a couple weeks. The chicks need to stay on medicated feed for 1 month after being put out on dirt.
The Search on this site is great because you can go to the category then the drop down sub category and then Type in a question or target words and the search will bring up past threads related to your question or que. Most questions have been asked before and then you don't have to wait for someone to answer your questions. Members on this site are great and happy to help but, you might need a answer right away sometime. Past threads will give you tons of info and hours of reading. Best Wishes with your new little chicks : )

There are varying opinions regarding dealing with the concern for coccidiosis. Medicated feed is one option, vaccination is an other option. Then there is a third option which involved no medication, but giving chicks gradual exposure in the brooder to build up their immunity before they get out into the big world. Some studies have been done that show that chicks raised on deep litter that previous groups of chicks/chickens have been raised on have much less incidence of coccidiosis, even though they have been exposed to it from the feces contaminated litter. Also, Amprolium is a Thiamine blocker, which keeps the coccidiosis pathogen from multiplying... but, it also blocks Thiamine in the chick, which can lead to a different set of problems. My approach is to not medicate or vaccinate, give the chicks a clean dry environment, give them a good dose of probiotics in the form of fermented feed, and get them exposed to the soil soon after hatch. I have never had any issues with coccidiosis, though every time I buy feed, I am told at the feed store that my chicks will die if I don't give them medicated feed. Do your homework, research both sides of the discussion, and make a well informed decision. Neither decision is wrong.

Congratulations. I hope my broody hen's eggs will hatch about 11 days from now. It seems to me that one of my hen doesn't want to stop laying eggs, until she molts. She laid more than 35 eggs since 2 months ago. Do you know where to buy a chicken egg incubator that really works and the price is reasonable? I am looking for something that can accommodate between 10-15 eggs at a time.
