First Greetings

Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome! And yes I have checked with my citie's ordinances. I plan on just having 3-4 chickens, more if I move to a bigger property. The breeds that I am thinking on are Orpingtons and Barred Rocks. I do plan on collecting the eggs as well as meat. but I figure let them live for a few years before that, IF I haven't grown too attached that is lol Also I am worried about the ventilation, we get some strong storms, whether snow or rainy, with high winds. Made me think about the design of the coop and worry about chickens getting cold because of too much ventilation.

any thoughts on A-Frame coop, raised from the ground?

Lots of folks have Orps and BR, and are pleased with them. I've never had Orps, simply b/c of personal preference. I added BR this year and am very pleased with them.

I forget where you said you live, but ventilation, and lots of it is required no matter where you live. I'm at 44.5 lat, growing zone 4.5. Even in my cold climate, the birds NEED that ventilation, ESPECIALLY in winter to prevent frost bite! Under eave (soffit) vents and any louvered vents any where on the coop are usually impervious to weather, as long as they don't get covered with snow! Be sure that you make all vents and windows predator proof, meaning they should have a layer of hdw cloth. It's super easy to simply cover the lower side of your rafters with hdw cloth before installing your fascia boards or wall sheathing.

I'm not fond of the A frame styling b/c it is hard to ventilate. And, b/c of the roof pitch, you can't effectively use all of the sq. ft. in the coop. Roosting is also more difficult, placing the birds at too close proximity to that steeply pitched wall/roof. My preference leans towards a walk in style coop of either standard construction, or cattle panel. I've built both. Folks gravitate towards A frames b/c of ease of construction, but IMO you get more bang for your buck with a shed style or a CP. Check out this little book for design ideas that are simple to build and can be adapted to coop design. You might consider building a simple shed style coop that can be disassembled and moved when you leave your rental property.
