First Hatch of the Year and My First Hatch...EEK!

This batch isn't all dead, yay! Just the Cayuga egg again :(

I'm having a hard time candling, but once this batch is hatched I'll do my best to candle the next before moving them to the middle. I'm using a flashlight and my hands, and I don't see much. I was able to watch growth early on, but when we get to the end it's looking like a big black mass. Part of my problem is that the lens is convex (rounded outward) so I can't get the egg fully on it. I need to go shopping.

I did this to my flashlight with a piece of craft foam. Cut a hole in it, and taped over my flashlight

What?!

One of the eggs marked 1/29 pipped, and she's loud! Now paranoid and waiting until dark to candle all eggs due 1/27 and 1/29 to make sure everyone will be facing the right way when they pip

Three eggs due yesterday still working on breaking free. Not as loud as 1/29 but moving and I can hear them peck-peck-pecking at their eggs when I pick them up.

You sure your 9 wasn't upside down? :gig

:fl

I have a pip also

These ducklings will be the death of me. We lost one of the 1/25 babies, and I don't know when for sure because she was quite alive yesterday afternoon but quite dead when I checked at 6pm :( the other 1/25 babies are still alive but not making much progress. When I pick them up I can hear tapping, but I may start to chip back some egg. All the 1/27 and 1/29 babies have pipped or are on their way (cracked bulges in eggs).

I need to go read more intervention posts.

@Miss Lydia something to consider. I've become emotionally attached to one of the eggs in the incubator right now. She makes the cutest honk, which probably means she's a boy but we're overrun with boys so pretending she's a girl

Any one made a safe hole with their duckies?
