In my experience the hatched chicks only encourage the unhatched chicks. I've never had an egg fail to hatch as the direct result of being knocked around, pecked, fallen over, and laid on. I have had eggs fail to hatch because the humidity was too high and when the other chicks knocked the egg over so the pip was down the chick inside ended up drowning. All downward pips died in that hatch. If they have a hole to breathe from and your humidity is not getting too high they will survive for days even if they get stuck in the egg so you can give them plenty of time to hatch on their own. Sometimes if the humidity is high chicks won't dry very well in the incubator but they should at least be much drier and active. They continue to fluff for another day after I put them in the brooder.
