I just got an incubator yesterday, it's the little giant! I have it all set up and I went and bought the automatic egg turner to go with it today. This is my first hatching experience, and I am only going to do about 24 eggs first. I could use some pointers from the more experienced hatchers! One question I do have is since I am only going to do 24 can I leave a few of the rails on the turner off to accommodate the thermometer I have? Or do I have to leave them all in it?
All the advice you can give me will be much appreciated!!!!!

I am so excited to hatch me some new little baby chickies!

:rolleyes:Leave the rails in. It will allow nice even spacing for good air flow if you have a fan. Also if you start it up at least 8 hrs before its best to get humidity and temp right. Ive found its easier to add containers or sponges around the turner add water to rather than fill the area in the bottom. Remember air sack up if an egg is too rounded to tell the right side up candle and put the air sack end up. Humidity is more important than you think for a respectable hatch rate. Start with both red plugs in to reach optimal humidity. Only open the lid when needed. Opening it too much causes temp fluctuations. Make sure as the booklet tells you to position your incubator where its not in direct sunlight or drafty areas as it defiantly causes temp issues. Also keep it in a room that keeps a steady temp if the outside temp fluctuates 10 degrees it can throw you off. Dont get nervous if your temp jumps around within 3-4 degrees of 99-100 as long as its not there long..... hmmm what else..... research research research.... but most of all have fun.

I have had it going since yesterday and added the turner today after I got home. Now I know I need to let it sit after adding the turner, because the motor will give off some heat! I was wondering how I was going to tell which way I should sit the ones that didn't have a deffanate larger end. Thank you! I will candle before I put them in. I have watched lots of youtube videos and done alot of reading on the subject. I added some water to the bottom like it says and humidity is at about 37% right now. I will add more if I need to. I got my incubator used and one of the plugs were missing so my husband went in my sons room and found a toy cone, like the ones they put on the side of the road, but of course alot smaller, and it fits perfectly! The temp got up to 102 after adding the turner which I figured would happen, so I turned it down just slightly. Thank you so much for your reply and advice!!!!!!!!

If you aren't sure which end is the air cell, take a strong flashlight and do some candling before you set. Sally Sunshine has some great hatching tips on her page. You might want to check them out. Good luck with your hatch.

Thank you I will go and check that out now! will have to find me some batteries for my led flashlight! Keeping my fingers crossed that I get over 50% success!!!!!!!

So exciting!!! I just ordered eggs today!!!! They'll come in two weeks. I am looking to get a Brinsea Mini Advance incubator. The Brinsea company is OUT OF STOCK right now!! I hope they come in before the eggs do!

Maybe so! I know you can't wait to see how those babies turn out! Can I use a regular led flash light or do I need to get a more powerful one to candle my eggs. I can't see anything, I can't see the air sac.

I switched to led lights.... you can try laying the egg on a bunched up towel and add more than one light around it, https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-101

CANDLE EGGS
DAY 1

Always wash hands before handling eggs.
The shell of an egg is thin and opaque when held near a bright light. The easiest type of egg to candle is the white shelled egg and some of the hardest eggs to candle are dark brown eggs, like the Maran eggs pictured below.

You could try two or more flashlights to see into them!
