Only if she read the book! My girl had three litters, never dropped temp. I knew she would be delivring within 12 hrs when she got whiny and antsy. But yes, in many grump the temp does drop.

It dropped, you likely did not catch it. The drop in temp goes along with the porgesterone. It has to drop for labor to begin.
I have been breeding and showing dogs for over 20 yrs.

No, it didn't. I took her temp so much she got quite annoyed with me. I'm no newbie to dogs either, although she was the first one I actually did all that stuff with. I asked my mentor breeders and vet and they ll confirmed that no, it doesn't always drop, or ifit does it may be as close as half an hour before the first pup.

I would say your temperature taking device was defective. I always keep temperature charts beginning about a week before scheduled whelping day. Temperature will fall gradually, and always dips below 98 about 24 hours before whelping. I take temps 3X per day, 6am, noon, 6pm, and before I go to bed, usually around 11. Never had a one that did not drop.

I recommend using a NEW digital thermometer, and keeping a chart. Especially if you have not done ovulation timing, your whelping date can be anywhere from 58 to 70 days from the last breeding. Keeping a temperature chart can really help you pinpoint when delivery should be expected. It can also help you understand if you have an issue such as uterine inertia. If the temp goes below 98 and then back up and you don't get puppies, you could have an issue.

My point was not to get into a debate with you, but to let the OP know that things are not always textbook, and that may or may not occur, so dont think that if her temp isnt dropped you wont get puppies.

Oh, and my girl was also unusual in that she never was ready to breed (per progesterone testing) until her 19-21st day of heat. It CAN vary by breed and families, too. I have friends who breed rotties, and they do seem to be textbook breedings. ASDs seem to have their own ideas. Some cycle every six mons, some cycle every nine, some once per year. Girls seem to follow their moms as to when they are ready to breed in their cycle. My line runs to the late end, my friend has girls she breeds on the 8th day.

I'm not going to debate this any further, so as not to hijack the thread.
