I got my first Marans egg today! Is it normal for it to be speckled?

It is normal for them to be occasionally speckled - It usually means your egg is lighter than a good, dark one. Speckling is when a hen sparsly "sprays" on the chocolate coating, instead of a nice, even coat. You should expect them to be like this for a short while, then get REALLY dark, then lighten up and stay sort of light compared to the "dark" phase, depending on what quality of Marans you have.

My Cuckoo Marans lay medium brown eggs, the color of hot chocolate, with dark brown speckles. We named one of them CoCo, because her eggs look like (cocoa!). Very nice eggs. Mine are ALWAYS speckled.
