First Night Outside!!!

OMG...my 7 week olds just now put themselves to bed...all six of them. I went outside to help them up that crappy Eglu ladder, and I find NOBODY on the ground and 6 fluffy bodies up top roosting away like they'd done it all their lives! I said, Goodnight, Peeps! And quietly shut the coop door. I am so tickled I can't stand it ;)

I know, don't you feel so proud of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hooray!!! Hahhaaa hope i can post that my little ones go in by themselves soon too :D

My girls went outside for the first time between 5 and 6 weeks old. It broke my heart! Even though we have a great coop and it's very secure, those first few nights I didn't get to sleep without hearing them peeping in the house were very hard for me. For the first week or so they had the incubator on them at night, but then we shut it off. At dusk we turn on their little light inside for an hour or so to get them to go into the coop before the door closes. I'm tempted to try not turning on the light right now to see if they go up on their own.

They've been outside now about a month and a half. They used to cry when I went out to say goodnight and shut the light off, but now they don't even flinch.

*sniffles* My young ladies are growing up!

OK Folks here is my problem. I have 18 8 week old chicks and 4 hens that are about 4 yrs. Every night since I got the babies I have to go out and put them (chicks) up in the chicken house. They are piled on top of each other outside and I know they would freeze. It is getting in the 20's and 30's.
Problem is, I have to climb in the run and have to catch them once I start picking up one or two. I try to wait until they are roosting.

Any ideas on how to get them to go up in the chicken house? Once they are up they go right to the roost.
I know it is probably the big girls being mean when they go up. One of the big ones has taken to helping the chicks but she even has abandoned them now and goes to bed.

Try building a 2nd roost for the chicks. You can leave it, or you can take it down after they've gotten used to each other.

I live in Ohio and the week after next looks a lot warmer. My peeps are only just over a week old I was told. I am planning on them going out, with a heat lamp, at about 4 weeks, I hope! I have 6 and thankfully they're all doing great. Lost one on the way home with them, so they replaced it. So back to 6. I haven't done chickens in a long time. When I was a kid we always had them in my room in a box, with a miracle whip jar full of hot water. There was a towel wrapped around it. They would all live! I am amazed, knowing what I know today.
