First Outing

Today we let our 5 week old out in the outdoor coop for the first time. It took them a little to come down the ladder but it seems they’re loving scratching in the dirt once they were down.

Question: do you recommend for them to go in the brooder in the garage at night? Do I still need to dig hardware cloth in the group to predator prove?

What's your nighttime temperatures like right now? And how well feathered are the chicks? I booted mine outside at 5 weeks but it was decently warm by then.

For predator protection, yes it's a good idea to use welded wire or hardware cloth either buried straight down or aproned around the outside perimeter.

It is staying above 54 at night now and it looks like they’re feathered pretty well.

I think that should be fine for them temperature wise. As long as there's no drafts on them they can easily huddle together at night to keep warm.
