First pip, wrong end of the egg

Well, I used tweezees and picked off those little pieces of shell. The inner membrane only had a tiny slit in it so I made that a hole. I could hear peeps and saw a tiny little beak.

Ok, don't do anything else, until it looks like it won't make it out on its own. After 24hrs and it still hasn't made any progress you can then think about helping but you have to be super careful when chipping off small bits of the shell. You don't want to sever a vein and it starts bleeding. And if that happens, the yolk as well hasn't been absorbed. So stop, and give it more time.

Yeah, I got a little more carried away after the first one. I heard peeps inside a couple shells with no pips in them so I panicked and made an air hole for them because I was afraid they'd suffocate. Then 6 hours later I was worried they couldn't get out so I removed some bits of shell. Then I panicked and thought maybe they were shrinkwrapping so I carefully opened the membrane where there weren't any blood vessels.... They made it ok, but in hindsight with my group I probably could have stopped at the airhole, if even that. I've read all the articles and posts for/against helping, and I'm pretty sure I crossed the line a couple of times. It was just so tempting, and my imagination was wreaking havoc on my better judgment. Sigh...live and learn. Hopefully I will keep my marbles in the bag tonight when I go home and not panic...The peeps are so stinking cute. Maybe I'll just have a glass of wine and go to bed :gig

I know! I can see that tiny little beak in there and those little peeps...so tempting but I'm being impatiently patient :gig

Wine would do me in for sure, I should try that!

Thanks Sean! I only took those pieces off because they'd moved to cover the little slit in the membrane. No bleeding and I'm leaving it alone now.

Since it pipped at the wrong end that counts as an internal pip because it did not pip into the air cell. Does that make sense?

When we first start out hatching, It's a normal emotion to try and help....hard to resist not helping but after losing several chicks you'll get to the point that it just doesn't help, it hurts trying to help and it probably would have done fine on it's own accord.
