First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

It had been in the 80s here. But she put up with him. He really is a great roo. When all the hens r together he is happy when they aren't he doesn't know who to go with and os constantly back and forth.

Just for the record and for those of you living in alligator or scorpion heaven, 80's is hot here. When we get to 80 we normally have 90% humidity. Plus we are use to 60 being a nice day. When we get to 90 or those few days of 100, we surrender.

A little breeze can make a huge difference, but it seems on those hot days we never have a breeze until it turns into a tornado.

(Just adding and explaining what Holm said)

Thanks Ralphie:D

But it all true. Yesterday it was hot and muggy and the second the wind came up a little one of the neighboring towns had a tornadoe/funnel cloud.

I know Holm, I went in for lunch and was wondering just how hot it was outside and I looked and my thermometer was just a little over 80, I felt worse than I did when it was 95 in Florida!

That wind was a lifesaver, but I was knowing someone was going to get nailed with a storm.

Bert has lost his ongoing fight with bumble foot.
He lived only 11 months. I found him lying peacefully in the middle school pen.
I do not think the middle schoolers are responsible for his death.

He was a good rooster. Had he not contracted Bumblefoot who knows what might have been.
I know my wife and I will miss him.

It is a very hot humid day here today. I assume that was too much for him. Even in the shade it would be hard on him. Last night I noticed he was "panting" which worried me.

The nice thing about Bert is he proved the detractors wrong, He lived long enough to breed and has many offspring. He was a normal 20 pound chicken.

There will be no autopsy as the damage due to infection in his feet and legs was evident. He even had some spreading into his thigh.

I wish he had made it a year. Maybe the next ones will.

I even included his baby picture. I know many of you will be glad to not hear about Bert again. I can't say I will mourn him, he was a farm animal, but I will miss him.
I love that picture of him trying to fit through the pop door...
He will be missed.

I am hoping now, I can keep his babies alive and get eggs from them.

The babies should have more stamina with a Dixie Rainbow for a mother. They seem to have the same bodies as a CX just the coloring is off. I watched them running last night with the other babies, they run just like a CX. I think CX runs are funny to watch.

Ralphie, I was so sad to hear the news about Bert's passing. It's good he left babies so his legacy will live on. I'm also excited to here that you are getting another batch of CX to raise.

Jessica, I'm following your situation with your neighbor with great interest. Lol, at her complaints about the chicken manure. I wonder what they are going to say about her horse manure? I guess she thinks her $%#! doesn't stink.

We are going thru a run of 100 degree plus temperatures as well. My poor birds. I've got a fan going in their yard and I put frozen milk jugs in their coop, but its pretty rough on them.
