Actually, fall is when the broiler chicks go on sale here (it was 102F today), so... all depends.

I figured that, Here we are getting ready for 40 below now,

Are you serious? Is the west coast the only place that does fall chicks???

Well, to be honest, I only just found this out after I spent way too much to get some here. Ugh!

I'm doing fall chicks -- In fact I'm going to order 30 CX from the feed store today, so I can get them next week. We've decided that fall is actually a better time here in California as it is still warm when the chicks are young and need it, but nice and cool when they are bigger.

I have to share with Ralphie -- as you're the one you motivated me to raise some CX until they are turkey-sized -- that we roasted up our 9 pounder last week. We did it exactly as we would a turkey and it was delicious.

Finally, I think I gave my chickens the most exotic treat ever last night. Our dog alerted us to a rattlesnake a few feet from our back porch and hubby killed it. We discovered that it was pregnant (which made us kind of sad, actually). But, going with the "don't waste" theme, we took out the little snakes, removed their heads and threw them to the chickens. It took them a few minutes to figure it out and then they slurped them up like udon. One hen got the lion's share and was so full she could barely waddle into the coop last night.

Morrigan, I am glad you discovered the great taste of super sized CX's. I think I like the super sized chickens better than I like turkey, The breast meat is so much more moist. ( that sounded like a grammar error).

I have a snake fetish. I would kill them all, I fear them almost as much as I fear bats.

Oh, I forgot the mention I have my first "lap chicken".

It is a CX. When I sit in my chair for chicken TV and to watch them, she comes over and starts making weird cooing noises. She picks things off my feet and legs, then looks up at me until I either lift her up or she jumps up. I have not had a chicken do this before.

She will sit on my lap like she is Queen. Pearl (lab) is not happy to see a chicken getting held when she is not. So she sits there lying her head next to the chicken. This is the chicken Pearl cleaned the butt on. I have always picked her up before, never have I seen her want up like tonight. And the noise is so funny, it is almost like a purr or chatter, she just sits and talks and talks.

Kind of neat, too bad it is a CX. Prospects for having a lap chicken next spring are not good.
