First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

We do both the fridge and the coolers, the ones in the fridge are drier is all I think. The ones in the cooler are in contact with water and ice so the color changes a tad. After we freeze them and thaw them you cannot tell the difference. Or at least I never noticed it.

We did add ice a couple times a day. When I opened it up this morning all of the ice had melted. Yesterday There wasn't a smell. Today it did have a scent.

The yellow and red are actually in the meat of the tenderloin. It's not on top of the meat, it is the meat. I have never seen meat like this. It almost looks freezer burned but yellow and red instead of white. The breast meat on top of the tenderloin was not that weird yellow red color. I don't know what that means? I'm guessing I will need to throw away the tenderloin? I am wondering if I need to throw away (let our live chickens eat) it.

If you rinse the chicken does it smell? It could have been the water with the chicken residue.

I can't personally identify what that yellow is from the photo. I suppose that if it were me, I'd cut if off and throw just that part away. I probably wouldn't throw the whole thing away. But that's me.

When I rinsed them off they did still smell. It wasn't a horrible smell, just a little pungent smell, I know I've smelled other raw chicken that smelled like that. But the other ones didn't smell at all and I can't remember what is normal :). And yes the water around them was very smelly.

I baked all the chickens that were in that cooler so it would kill off anything growing on them. I cooked them to over 200 degrees internal temperature. Then I will freeze the cooked meat. we are debating whether to eat them ourselves or feed them to the chickens in the winter. What would you do? If I google it I find out we are all going to die from eating any food so I don't really trust that :)

The yellow part is super weird. I have no idea what it means.

I'm sure they were fine and since you cooked it and going to freeze it, there is no reason to fear getting sick from it. People get sick from improperly cooking things, not properly cooking something kinda weird. Maybe it was an ice burned area, which wouldn't hurt you when cooked, just not very appetizing to look at and not the best tasting. Maybe it was something medical with the chicken itself and removing that area and cooking the rest would have been completely fine. It is doubtful that the whole bird was unsafe for consumption. Matter of fact, your birds were probably safer for your consumption than the chicken you buy at the store is. Who knows what kind of nasty people are working with them, dropping them on the floor, sneezing, etc.

In the end, you have to do what you feel is right for your family.

JESSICA!!!

Why did you have to mention all of that?

That is a fear of mine, I am afraid I am going to catch an STD from something I buy in a store that comes from someone working in the food area, like baker, butcher, packager or someone. Then goes to the bathroom. deals with personal issues and either does not wash or runs cold water over his/her fingers for 3 seconds and considers them clean! Oh Gross!

If I ever get an STD I want to get it the old fashioned way not from a contaminated piece of chicken!

I knew you'd appreciate it, Mr Rubber Gloves. Lol!

OMG.. I wish I had never told any of you about my little OCD need for rubber gloves! hehehehee
Lol! I like having rubber gloves around too Ralph. I was a Nurse's Assistant for 10 years. I have used up some rubber gloves. However, I only wear them when I am handling dirty stuff. Not clean stuff like dishes....bwahahahaha!
