That or do what my dad insists upon; keeping the hens around 10 /12 pounds and the cocks no more than 15 pounds. That is still a lot of chicken.

That works, the problem is a bird that matures at 10-12 pounds is not going to give you a large table bird until maturity. By the time they mature the meat is not as tender or good.

AI is out as it is gross! As JR said, getting a large bird that can reproduce naturally is a problem. I am not ready to give up on it. BUT it is a challenge.
 
I think it will end up being a matter of timing.You will have to use the cockrel as soon as he gets old enough,before he reaches full weight


That would work fine for you people living in the land of eternal sunshine and warmth. For those of us that have 9 months of winter and 3 months of tough sledding it would be impossible.
