First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

He is just at that ugly stage but he looks to have the makings of a fine strong bird

I think with them strong legs and that upwardly stance he will end up a cracking addition to your breeding pen.

Good Luck you guys with your weather!

I have Toad pictures!

Nice birds, I have put them back on free will feed. They do not seem to eat or gain like CX's, even though they are 3/4 CX's. The breasts are smaller, that maybe genetics or my having withheld feed. The thighs and legs appear larger than CX's and they are taller. I am hoping this is the bird I want for the future.
I think they are wonderful... hoping this works for the future...

I am too. I suppose what I am doing is similar to the slow grow CX's. But I started this a few years back and want to see if I can finish it now. I will not be eating any of these guys/gals. They will be next years breeding stock. I am really hoping for a larger thighed bird. My Wife and I fight over the thighs, I usually get her drunk before I grill them so her reflexes are slower.....

The birds are very upright. I am also hoping free will feeding does not come back to haunt me. However, I would hate to lose size because I was stingy on the feed. It is such a balancing act to get those two things right. I have a few more Toad eggs in the incubator and more to put in. BTW Toad's lay great eggs they are jumbo sized and lay them daily.

On a sad note I lost my last CX hen yesterday at just over 11 months old. That seems to be the life span on them for me. (Did I mention this before?) Old age makes me tend to repeat myself.

would be great if you could get a sustainable slow grow toad. Yea thighs are what I like best too... Family I go to for holidays are the same, and no one eats wings....so I need 4 legged chickens LOL
I was wondering if you had any cx left. good to know that they might last 11 months. I am debating on keeping the smallest one of mine.

Mine might have lived longer had I not taken a vacation in December and had to leave feed for a few days with them....Also the hard winters we have make withholding feed hard to do. If I had a better shelter and warmer winter climate. they might do better. You are a little better on the winter weather than I am. but not all that much. If you keep some let me know how it goes. The egg size will shock you.

I actually had one in with my turkey eggs, that's how big they are. I had them marked to hatch on the 13th. I checked the eggs on the 8th and I had one hatched! It was a Toad..He was not happy being alone in the incubator dodging the turning egg trays.
