I applaud you for finding a way to raise healthy food for your family... some one posted "even meat birds need love" ... but it sure is hard when the time comes.that is soo true! it seems that the strain of CX makes all the difference, that and feeding/ranging routines. unfortunately we are limited to a back yard with a neighbor to the north who is not keen on my urban homestead ways so I have to raise the birds in a second level in the coop, out of his line of sight. they are really quite nicely mannered birds. the line we got is quite lively and after reading up on the suggestions, I place all food and water up off the ground so that they have to stand to drink and eat, which helps keep them from turning into "toads". I have been working with my kids to come to an understanding that we can be kind and gentle to these birds, even though we are going to eat them.
