For those of you that have raised CX to laying age and beyond. What type of feeding regimen did you follow? I'll be picking up some chicks the end of February to begin my breeding project. Also, what age do they start laying?

When the CX start to lay is variable. Mine did not start until the next spring. Others say they start around 6 months if you get them in the early spring.

Keeping CX alive is a PITA. After a week I only feed them what ever they can eat in 15-20 minutes twice a day.

After about 3 weeks I have them in a tractor or free ranging, feeding them only in the evening for 15-20 minutes. Expect a high death rate.

Do not over feed them, that is a death sentence for them. I even force my toads to go without feed every few days. They do not like it but I want to keep them slim and trim. I have found once you get another breed (the Rainbow in my case) into the birds they are not as prone to over eating as the pure CX is. It could be because I am a few generations down the line from the X's too.

Another hint, do not give them a high roost. A foot up is enough or you will get feet injuries. These guys are not Olympic athletes.
