First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

Toad Tadpoles!!

The whiter ones (2) are toads. When the larger toad was next to the others, they are twice the size.. .I am happy with this generation of Toads today.

How did you get the toads to lay?? my CX quit laying in oct

I have to wait so that I don't end up with cx × D'Uccle. It takes 21 days to cycle the "genetic material" from a rooster out of a hen. I'm not sure how that would work. I do want to cross my cx to my spitzhauben and my Marans though.

I have never found this true. Put your desired rooster in with her give it two days and the new roosters sperm will be waiting to fertilize the next egg. I was told this and have found it true. But maybe someone else has had other outcomes

This is Ralphie's fault I'm here.
I welcome Chaos...here is my story:
2/6/2015 - Started with CX from Murray McMurray culled down to two pullets & two cockerels - limit fed, pullets made it cockerels died on maturity.

CX pullets
Had Turkens to raise the eggs...bad idea, re-thought using basic handmade incubators
still incubator @ 18 days

Incubator with side to side pull.
Housing:
Trampoline re-purpose with Tyvek roof - bamboo uprights, horse 2x4 fence at base and hardware cloth as a second wrap.
inside layout

Baby Chick pen inside "Chicky-bouncy-house"
Back to chickens...
To replace the lost CX males and Turken females I opted to use Dark Cornish.
Purchased one Dark Cornish cockerel - BamBam:
and two pullets

This is my start:
F1 generations will be 50%DC(dark cornish) 50% CX and look like this:

Meat quality:

I like game hen size
F2 generations are 50%DC X 50%CX bred back to the same and look like:

F2 100%DC X 50%DC/50%CX are 3/4DC and look like this:

F3 generations are 7/8DC and look like this:

I procured 4 new FFA project CX hopefuls this weekend: hint do this in the winter spring they might die in the heat, limit feed.

So there it is in a nut shell.

for us who have CRS what cross makes a toad again? Or how do I work towards them?

I am going to steal and post the instructions for these that Chaos asked me if it was correct.

He has it simplified way more than I could.

It is hard to believe I have been working on these for so many years already..
These are Chaos's easy to follow instructions on making a toad.

CX to CX = CX (Stable)
CX (Stable) to Dixie = Lizard
Lizard to CX = Frog
Frog to Frog = Toad

It takes 3 years to get the toad from the CX's.

Everyone else here is doing very similar things with different birds. Some are truly impressive. I am thinking of bringing in a cushion comb because of the cold I have up here above the arctic circle..

You can always dub the comb.
