First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

My chickens would climb up and sit on my chest for popcorn. Yes, it's happened. I wasn't handing it out fast enough.

Thank you all for the kind words. It's funny but chickens are a real benign animal of sorts, in the sense that I mean taking care of 18 or 600 is really not that much different. I mean, you do have to haul more bags of food, fuss with bedding more often and handle way more eggs than you could ever imagine but it is really nothing like having 600 dogs, cats, horses, kids, etc. As long as chickens have everything that they need, you can tend to them once per day and they will be fine. This is why chicken math works SO darn well!

Ok, I'm off to it. Everyone have a wonderful week and I'll duck in here when I can.

Are you still getting the cream legbar eggs? Or none at all? I would really like a cream legbar or two to add to my mix... I just can't get over how insanely expensive they are.

Yeah, everything is on hold for now. sigh I don't know what I'm looking at for a recovery time. Right now I've got 10 chickens and 4 2 week old babies. Aimee is supportive of me and will make sure they are watered and fed and eggs gathered. It may be SIL Clint doing it and he is gripping but will mind Aimee ha.

Yesterday, when I was outside giving the babies their popcorn I heard a terrible racket coming from the other coop. It sounded like two chicken's egg songs competing to be louder than the other.

I went and looked in the coop thinking I would get fresh eggs and not have to worry about them freezing. I have 7 nest boxes. I had one chicken in the north box, then a row of empty boxes and 2 chickens in the south box fighting with each other over who gets to keep that nest.

I was worried about them breaking the egg in the nest. I reached under them, getting pecked by both to find the nest empty.

I guess the one chicken noticed the other under her and decided she had hatched out a baby...weird birds.

BTW the whole time it was popping, I had to put up with crap from my spousal unit. She says people do not feed chickens popcorn? I say she is wrong.
I am a people and I feed them popcorn, Do any of you feed yours popcorn?
I always feed mine popcorn and minnows, the ducks especially love minnows cause they can swallow them whole.

We are eating Red sex link rooster for supper tonight. They make the nicest fryers for 2.

We will have left over chicken legs tomorrow.

I skinned the breast and left the skin on the rest. I used my special blend of spices coated the chicken after using eggs and milk to dampen it.

I really like the taste and texture of Red Sex link roosters! I may have to raise more of them. I can smell it frying now, my mouth is watering already. I brown it on both sides then will bake it at 350 for 40 minutes.

Yummy!

That sounds delicious Ralph. I'll have to try that. What did he dress out in weight? I may not even get this as my computer is going in tomorrow. I posted a one line post 6 different times yesterday not knowing that it was posting. Felt like an idiot. Some guy said' "Dang Linda" lol I have to admit I've been very bad. Very. I cancelled all my egg orders waiting for the surgery and last night couldn't resist. 8 eggs, Sibright, bantam. $4 + $7 shipping. WHO could turn that down. One state over. I may have to have them babysat while I'm gone. ha.

I lost an egg today frozen cracked and rolled in wood chips coated with poop..

I thought about fixing it for the wife, then relented and decided to feed it back to the chickens...

I hate having a frozen egg.

I had two chickens in the same nest box today again. I think they have a love hate relationship, there was 2 empty boxes, but they had to sit in the same box.

And to make today worse, I got attacked by a chicken. I reached under her to get the eggs and she became violent. She pecked, pecked and pecked while telling me what she thought of me.

I was offended, until, I sat back and thought about it. If I was sitting on the porcelain throne doing my thing and someone reached under me to see how things were going, I would probably fight back and tell them what I thought of them too.

I shared this with my Minnesota friends too. I am hoping for sympathy somewhere.
