First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

My worst fear appears to be coming true.

Bert maybe in mortal danger. His leg is swollen and he can barely walk. It is possible I will not get any toads this year. Argggggh...

I was so counting on them, but I do not think he has had a chance to fertilize any of the rainbows eggs. I will be keeping their eggs now, on the off chance they are his. I can cross my fingers and hope.

I can also hope Bert gets better.

I hate to say it but I think by will have better luck with a Dixie roo and CX hens... I have a Welsummer CX egg in the bator and hoping its fertile the egg was laid 2 hours after there first breeding so it probably isn't but what's the worst that could happen it candles clear and I toss it...

It is a day for a couple extra cocktails at the B&G!

Holm- I know you cannot imbibe, but we will make you a stiff Shirley Temple... extra cherries. So sorry about your hen. I have never heard of a chicken losing their beak! Poor gal.
Are you saying you will not have chickens next year? I may have misunderstood your post.

Turkeytruff- Didn't your incubator cause a mass homicide about a month or so ago, also? Maybe it was Morrigan. I can't remember. Sorry for your Mistral babies. And what is going on with the roo's?! Seems spring brings out a bit of feisty behavior in the boys.
My sewing machine always breaks when I need it the most too. A bit of cleaning it always seems to make it magically work again. I abuse my machine, for certain. Clean and tune after every 2 bobbins?! Ha, not likely.

Ralph- Sniffle, sniffle. I hope Bert recovers!!!! He is kind of our mascot. Maybe he jumped down from his proud dog kennel perch. Give him extra snuggles, tv watching, and recliner time!
Your dog looks especially resigned to her fate of wearing a muzzle. Does she eat the eggs?! Poor girl.

All is well here... except it is snowing. I think I will snuggle up in front of the fire with Irish coffee most of the day. I will also have to move the CX brooder inside. I think it may just be too cold out. Cricket doesn't think it is too cold, but she is mostly feathered.

I like cherries, I want some too!

when ever you expect something to work, it doesn't, murphy's 2nd law I think. I have my "new" discounted close out incubator running. IT is a very cheap model. a Styrofoam case, no plastic cover, cheap, cheap cheap. No fan, no turner, but it has a digital thermostat that is 4 degrees off from the thermometers I trust. I have it running at 102 now, I think that is right on a still air. I will be putting eggs to hatch in later today. ( and crossing my fingers.)

It is hard to say with Bert, I picked him up tipped him over to look at his feet better. I cannot tell if the pad is swollen or not, I am saying 70% chance it is slightly bigger on the left. He was not happy with the exam and fought it the whole time. I have put the feeder a tad higher in the air so it will be harder for him to sit by it and eat. He will have to stand on tippy toes to eat, or eat what the others drop on the ground.

I doubt he hurt it jumping down. I took everything he could jump off from out of the area. I do not think he can get to the nest roost or other roosts. I made a roost 6 inches off the ground for him, he refuses to use it. The step coming out of the coop is about 12-14 inches I put a ramp there for him, but he refuses to use that too and jumps it. He wants to think he is a real chicken. It has only been a week or so he has been with the girls, but I have my fingers crossed some look like him. If he does pass away, I will keep eggs for the next 3 weeks and try to hatch them. After that Ed is going into that pen so I can raise salamanders. Ed is a good sized Partridge Chanticler so they would be acceptable to cross.

I have never caught either eating eggs, This one is the mother of the one I suspect of eating eggs. The white one is well trained and behaved. She is just lazy and does not like to go outside. She is 9 years old and just slowing down. The other one is 6 and while well trained tends to ignore her training. I have not caught her eating eggs either, but I think she may have gotten into some hidden nests. In my house, dogs are considered guilty until proven innocent. The pup has learned to take the muzzle off so I need to get a different strap for it. She thinks she did something wrong when she wears that so she heels, sits, stays and follows al her commands like an angel while wearing that. She may wear it the rest of her life, she is so well behaved. I know this has put a stop to poop eating!!!!!

NO SNOW ALLOWED!! Do a snow, snow go away dance. It requires a few more Irish coffees I assume though.

My meaties are in a day early! I should go rescue them from the feed store.

I plan on picking up a *couple* extras. Ya know, just incase. And I am sure they are a close out deal.

Dogs that are well trained seem to rarely act it... they think they have had so much education, they are too good to have to listen. Ours does anyhow. He is a great dog, just selectively uses his intellect and training.

Fingers crossed for Bert. Bumble foot?

Snow ending dance. Check. It doesn't take much for me to act foolishly. It comes naturally. I will have another Irish coffee when I return from the feed store, though!

Yep, I was thinking bumble foot was a possibility...
