So I have found that keeping cx through winter cost a bit more than wintering layers. To keep weight gain to a minimum I have to supplement some of the daily feed with greens and other assorted vegetables. In place of 1 feeder for all I have a bunch of little feed stations spread out to make them keep moving. I spread the vegetables between the feed and water stations so they eat it as they move.

I hold back feed this time of year. I do not dare feed in piles or other places, I have a squirrel problem. I cannot kill enough of the miserable little rodents to keep them out of the feed. They come from miles around to eat my feed.

get a Dingo. They love small critters and are super easy to train. Mine herds the chickens and cats but eats chipmunks, Squirrel and other small things the chickens and birds have showed him.

Just before you get a Dingo check your state laws. Mine is registered as a Shepherd mix.

The biggest culprit of eating my feed is the cats. The dang feline family loves the chickens feed.

I have 2 labs, they love chasing squirrels when I am watching them. They think they have me fooled into thinking they are earning their keep. They are not..



BTW let the feeder on your big birds go empty for a day or so now and then. It makes them use up body fat.

I let it go empty for about 3 hours a day. That's when they are forced to eat veggies. I give enough food in the morning to get them until about 12. Then I refill at about dusk so the sleep good. They also get any fish we have left over twice a week. They love cod with cayenne on it. I don't give them any starches or fatty foods, I figure they have enough of that stored up.

I am hoping the size continues in them.

Genetics being what it is , it is hard to predict the next generation. I have my fingers crossed. I will, of course keep the biggest to breed again.
