First the yolk, then the shell...

I was outside the coop tonight and heard a "thump." I opened the door and saw two hens pecking under the perch. I knew it was an egg. I got a light, shined it in and saw no shell on the floor. I then shined it on Stretch's bare-no-feathered butt and saw the slimy shell hanging there.

This hen has had issues for months...lost its feathers on its butt, layed oblong eggs with blood streaks on the shell, now this...is it time to dispatch???

That really is up to you. I've got a soft shell layer that's never layed a "normal" egg, but I keep her because I like her and she is a pet to me. Many people do cull hens that are not productive layers. If mine aren't suffering, I leave them be. It's really up to you.

That's a good idea and you can try it. Mine won't eat hardly a bite when penned and only fret the entire time about getting out.​

I scrambled up five eggs along with shells for the hens...they ate it all. The bare butt does not have an issue with its diet.
