First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

Congrats on your roosting chicks! Mine figured it out and even put themselves to bed last night! Growing up fast!
I think we're finally getting down to knowing for sure if all 6 are pullets...I have one that I just really am not sure about, but I'm trying to refrain from asking more than once a week lol. I picked them out of a straight run group from a friend. This is the first time I've raised chickens, so I'm really happy with my luck!

Right, so the farm store got a few chicks in this week, so I picked out three black australorps (cause I wouldn't mind having a few more) and just came nack from stuffing them under the wanna-be mommy. We'll see what transpires in the morning. Gonna have to set my alarm for dawn so I can scoot on out to check.

It worked! I had to move her and her new charges into a dog carrier that I could close up (with food/water) because the other girls were apparently climbing in with them to lay their eggs since there were four eggs as well as the chicks. So adorable to see those three little heads peeking out from her breast feathers...will definitely be trying to get a picture asap!

Been a long time since I posted!!! My two roosters have just started crowing -- and we are now on the egg wait from the ladies.

Here's some pictures -- Arooba -- our Columbian Rock rooster and Jerk Chicken our Red Rock Cross rooster -- and then some of our 24 ladies!

I am absolutely loving Jerk -- his colours, his personality, he is a top notch sweet rooster. Arooba is definitely the protector of the flock. So far both are pretty nice to the ladies and I'm hoping they keep that up.

Ours all go back in the coop whenever we need to with a bit of scratch and the same "Laaaadies... come come come"

It's been pretty helpful as we have a lot of predatory birds in the area... as soon as I see ravens or eagles out I get them all rounded up and safe.

I didn't know ravens would go after them. We have kestrels and a couple different types of hawk that I watch out for. We get the occasional lost bald eagle, but they stay out of the denser poplations.

I don't know if we have ballsy-er ravens but definitely something a lot of locals have posted about!

I add random things to the coop as they are getting tossed out-- the basket was definitely a success. They also like the old dirt filled toilet we put in the coop! haha Gotta keep things interesting?
