First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

We are now getting about3 eggs a day from our flock and this past Saturday my kids and I walked to the co-op to clean it and at the perfect time we got to watch one of the girls lay an egg. Its important for my kids (my two youngest 5and 7) to know where the eggs come from and why we have to take such good care of our flock like we do.

Our First Lady has begun to lay!! She has given us three eggs over six days. We are so excited but can't wait until she produces more and for the other 11 ladies to join in the fun.

What's left of my second batch of chicks this year (hatched late Feb/early March) are starting to lay. Got one brown egg and one blue egg, so at least one of the layers is an EE. They didn't give me any warning (squatting, practice nests, etc.) so nesting boxes were set up tonight for their future use.

Also, mama Mimi led her charges out to forage for the first time today. She didn't like being in the dog kennel and reclaimed her nesting box as soon as the door was opened, calling the chicks to follow. So, took a chance that she could protect them against the rest of the flock and let her do her thing. So far so good. Saw her chase off one who got to close while they were out and about, so not worried.
