I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.
Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.
If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
Your coop looks like it will be a good size to start raising some chicks. I never thought I'd enjoy the taste of fresh eggs over store bought so much, but I do. And watching the antics of the chicks can be a blast.
We started with hatching White Leghorn eggs as a homeschool science project six years ago and got hooked. My coop has changed much over that time as I've expanded the run and added to my flock. I've modified my original design many times and the chickens haven't minded it a bit.
Presently I have 3 coops (main 5'x10', little (chicks >4 weeks but < 6 months), and the Silkie house. I also have an outdoor brooder because raising chicks inside the house created too much feather dust and noise.
Chicken tending can be a great hobby too. There's always something to do - besides clean the coop. My latest project is automating all three chicken coop doors to open and close at the same time using solar power so I don't have to rush out there early in the morning.
