First Time Egg Candler Scared!

Or, Are you sure it's day 7? When did you start your count? You know you don't count the day you set as day 1 right? That starts 24 hours after they've been incubating??

Guilty as charged!!!!! I do that too...lol 7 24 hour cycles starts day 7.

We complicate things for ourselves, don't we???

And then we say 21 days is just a guideline! So counting a day off shouldn't really matter! LOL

And when the others start hatching, its going to be so crowded and they will (gasp) ROLL THE EGGS!!!
Its madness, I tell you...
It doesn't bother me when they roll the eggs except for the fact if they role one that has pipped because then I can't see the pip...lol

If I can't see, then I don't know and if I don't know:

This actually brings up a serious question for me. I set my eggs on a Friday morning, about 8:00 am (I wasn't working that day). Some say morning, count the day, evening, don't count the day... I realize exact time may not matter, but I'm trying to decide if I should lockdown before I go to work - so it would be around 6:30-7:00 a.m. or wait until I get home around 4:00.

And another thing.... we say "day 1-17" yada, yada... then we say "final 3 days".... that's only 20 in my calculations. If we up humidity at the beginning of day 18 and they don't hatch till day 21, then that's actually 4 days, if you count whole days. Ugh!

In my case, I think all my air cells are good, weight loss is good, development seems good, temps/humidity has been good. I think I should do it before work. I think they should be ready.

Thoughts?

I'm forgetting day 0, or the first 24 hours. Ignore most of that... but I still want thoughts on morning or afternoon lockdown....

See we complicate things!!! In reality it doesn't matter if you lock down day 17, day 18, day 19 as long as the humidity is upped before they pip. I usually end up doing it half way through day 18 if not just a little before because it gives me time to play with getting the humidity right where I want it. My sister did day 19.

I just lockdown on day 18 and take them out when I cant see the floor any more

Any time after day 14 is okay for lockdown. If I had to travel, given a choice between stopping turning on day 14 or day 19, I'd go for day 14 every time.

Ok, candling results are in.

So far....

SLW
10 - Good
3 - Unknown Brown (see below)
1 - Yellow

BLR
2 - Good
1 - Unknown
10 - Yellow

If I'm judging this first time incubation by my fresh local eggs (SLW) I'm getting about 85% success at this point. I'm considering that my control group. The BLRs are pretty hard to swallow, but I'm really glad that at least two are hanging in there.

I could use your help with the "Unknown Brown". Below are pics of each kind, good, brown, yellow. What do you make of the Brown ones?

Good (veins and embryo, but hard to see in pic) How is the air cell looking at day 7 here?

Unknown Brown (I can't see veins, but they are not yellow)

Yellow (I'm assuming bad)

What think ye?

The brown and yellow look like clears to me. They are pretty porous as well. I would not expect to get eggs that porous from a buyer. (If they were from a buyer?) Not that they can't/don't hatch, just that I would want my best to go to the customer, and porous are not the "best".
Air cell looks good to me for day 7.
