first time getting shipped chicks

I am sorry that your experience with shipping has been so rough!!! I know I was really anxious especially when shipping cost more than the chicks that you are getting, as was the case for me. Are you going through Meyer as well? I know I have found their customer service really great and feel like they would be happy to work with you... I was really happy with them and when the time comes for more chicks I will use them again. I hope it all works out for you!

No, I got them from a breeder who is only a few hours away. He's been great. They finally showed up this morning and all but one seem fine. Littlest one had pasty butt and may have spraddle leg.

I am a first timer...currently in the middle of building my coop now! You can follow along here if you would like: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/924964/pallet-coop-time/10#post_14223058
I like the Ameraucana as well....a great looking bird and the different colored egg would be great!

I will check it out! We will be building our own coop as well! Last weekend we picked our final location in the back yard and cleared the area! I am sure I will be posting our construction progress as well!

Oh no sorry about your chick and order taking longer. I try to get chicks locally, but some breeds I just can't get here.

ATM I'm over run with chicks and I love it. I got new chicks b/c I have 27 dp chickens that are headed to freezer camp in 4 weeks. I ordered us caponizing tools from a felliw bcy member pollo paco? There's a thread on caponizing that I'm following and I have 2 very annoying silver laced wyandottes that are heading to become capons very soon. There's a white leghorn my bf named Brazen that will be last besides Nugget who is an ayam cemani x mottled orpington roo. We are planning our first meat processing day in 4 weeks and are now getting cones, pluckers, tables, another deep freezer. 3 muscovy ducks are also slated for freezer camp in a month, we may or may not attempt to caponize a drake.

I have a white splash polish, rose comb leghorn, easter and oilive eggers, and my roo is a salmon favorelle x wellsummer x light brahama that has had the surgically decrowing/quieting thing done and is a very good roo to my hens and towards us.

I had to put no pick on the faces of a few roos yesterday, the time has come to caponize. I love my chickens and ducks. I want to add marans in the spring. But I might have to forgo a colorful egg basket to have the breeds I want to breed for meat and their beauty.

Thanks. Only three hours away and with overnight express shipping I thought I was pretty safe. I doubt the little sickly one is going to make it. Seems worse every time I check on her. I moved her to a seperate box w/a light. :(

In better news, I scored a pumpkin box at my local grocery store today. So when they grow out of the wardrobe box, I can upside their brooder.

I used two big boxes with the ends cut out and duct taped together, light on one side so they could get away from it if they wanted to. I actually forgot we did end up after a few days of recieving them having a couple with pasty butt. It was work but we held their butts under trickling warm water in our bathtub and worked the hard crap with our fingers till it all disapeared, it took a while, had to be very gentil so they didn't lose any of their butt fuzz. It was gross but they lived.

Oh no! It's sad to lose a chick. I was going to order cornish x through meyer or murray mcmurray but they said it wasn't advisable to get that breed from them at my elevation of 6200' above sea level.

It might be I have to order through ideal then.

Okay I am very nervous! I bought 40 chicks from tractor supplies special order and I have no idea what to expect! I have no clue how long it will take for them to get here when I will get a call or anything! Plus it's been pretty cold here in Texas lately! I need all of them to make it because I'm not buying for jus myself but for 2 other people! How long until I hear something? I don't even know the hatchery that I'm receiving them from! My local tsc hAsent ever done a special order so they have no idea either! Any insight is much appreciated!
