Hello!

I have been incubating two sebastopol geese eggs. My first geese.

One hatched 24 hours ago, 24 hours after internal pip. Shes doing great, very curious, but she cannot stand up. Her legs just slide out to the side. There seems to be some power in them if I'm holding her she can push with them. Is this normal? How long does it take?

The second one pipped internally 48 hours ago, but has yet to externally pip. I made a safety hole, how long should I wait to intervene? I'd hate for her to die.

Thank you!

The one with its legs going out to the sides, what kind of bedding is it on? Sounds like it might be splayed leg.

The other egg might need help but if you just now gave it a safety hole, I'd say give it 12 to 24 more hours to see if it will start hatching on its own. If not, I can walk you through an assist.

Thank you for replying.

The one with the leg problem, for the first 20 hours or so, I left her in the incubator with the other egg, its a brinsea, so she was on that black grid tray.

Now I have her in her brooder, I put terry towels on the bottom as she is getting better traction and the legs are staying more under her.

I'm thinking if shes not stronger by tomorrow, I will band-aid her legs together and see if that helps.

The other one is still trying to come out. I candled her about 12 hours ago and she had moved around in the egg, but this was a shipped egg, so the air sac was really funny.

I decided this morning that since it had been 36 hours since I put the safety hole, and she looked funny inside, to try and take a look. Which then became a bigger hole until I found her beak.

There are still blood vessels in the membrane, little ones, so we are just playing by ear. She seems to really want to come out, she is pushing and squirming, but I don't want her to bleed to death, so we are waiting.

Hopefully she will come out soon, the other one keeps screaming for her.

I hope I am doing this right, I have been reading all the threads for hours.......

Glad that the one with leg issues is improving!

Yes, at 36 hours since safety hole stepping in was good. If you have exposed the inner membranes you're going to want to coat them with something like neosporin or coconut oil to keep them from drying out.

Is she making a yawning motion with her beak?
