I have four mix duck eggs on day 29 in my incubator. They have all been internally pipped or 24 hrs and a couple are rocking an tapping. When candeled you can see them moving and trying. But everything I've read say if they have externally pipped after 24 hrs of had internally pipped I should make a safety hole. Should I? And if not how much longer should I wait? Temp 99.5 hum 65%. Thanks!

Hi
I don’t wait longer then 24 hours for a safety hole
Go ahead and make one
Not a big one though
Candle see the beak and go just slightly above it so you don’t hit baby
Many times my little one still does his own external and hatches himself
But I have also had ones die I didn’t act fast enough and now I don’t hesitate
The hole should be the size of a pin to the sharpen size of a pencil
Nothing crazy just enough to get air in

After 8-12 more hours if they haven’t made their own external you can widen the hole towards the beak then leave it for another 12 hours
After that you may need to start assisting
But usually if my eggs are a good size they hatch themselves
With smaller air cells they will external quicker then take longer to hatch from that point with larger air cells they external later but hatch faster
It equals itself out time wise
I had a little one have a small crack in the egg my last batch and although I used wax to seal it that works cell grew much faster and larger then the rest. ( I honestly didn’t think that baby would hatch as the air cell was huge ) it didn’t external at the 24 mark so i made a small safety hole and to my surprise this baby external and zipped 8 hours later. I think he was actually in the air cell longer then I knew but he wasn’t in a hurry to external as he had plenty of air ;)

Is there any way of raising the humidity a bit? 65% may be a bit low and the interior membrane may dry out quicker. I'm having that issue right now with some chicken eggs, membrane sticking to the chick and drying there. Winter in Canada is rough!

Oh, and welcome! New Duck Mommy is a fantastic resource for egg hatching! :)

I kept a humidifier going in the bathroom I kept mine in along with a heater as it cooled the bathroom down
Seemed to work well to keep humidity up in the room and then the bator cooperated with me
I agree Winters are much different to hatch
My first batch I hatched will be 1 years old this month
The time goes so fast

Hey everyone this is my first time in this thread so I don't know how to tag everyone individually but yes I can turn the humidity up a bit, I also have a cracked egg fixed with wax doing really well I can hear him tapping away in there. Two seem more progressed then the other two, and I really thought they would have pipped themselves by now. I'm gonna candle them and try to post some pics.

The one with wax on it feels like it's trying to come through where the wax is should I pick it off? Oh and what's this bruising?

It's such a tough decision to help or not. I always have to sit on my hands and convince myself not to open the incubator. But all that said, I have helped in a handful of cases and saved them. I would keep a close eye on them after 24 hours of internal pips and no external pips. One thing I will point out though, sometimes you'll *think* they did their internal pip but they really were just pushing on that internal membrane or shadowing; if that's the case then they haven't really been internally pipped for 24 hours yet. It's a fine line of helping or not!

Yes I had that problem yesterday I couldn't tell if they were pushing on the membrane or not but after many YouTube videos and actual tapping I found they have infact internally pipped. I have one in question slightly but I'm pretty sure that has too but air cell is on the small side. I started with six one wasn't fertile and one passed away in the third week I did an eggtopsy and everything looked perfect so idk what happened.
