My chicken hen hatched an IB peachick on Aug 5th.

I've been feeding 24% protein turkey starter, and watering with electrolytes or probiotics.

Mom (chicken) and baby (pea) are segregated from the other chickens using a 10x10x6 chainlink dog kennel with a-frame tarp top. Mom and baby have a small chicken house to go into at night, inside the pen.

Your members' posts and threads have informed me this is likely a male IB. Wing primaries and secondaries are barred. I think I'm starting to see orangish primaries but it could be my imagination. Hard to get a good look, 'cause he sticks close to his "mommy" whenever I walk near.

What I've learned:
1. The head crest feathers first start peeking out at 2.5 weeks.
2. The little guy's body is just barely fitting through the chain links at 3.5 weeks. I expect he'll be too big to get through at 4 weeks of age, just guessing.

NOTE: Before anyone freaks out at my running with scissors attitude on raising this baby pea inside a chainlink pen he can crawl through, note that outside this 10x10 pen is a 280 foot perimeter Premier1 electric mesh portable poultry netting fence to ward off skunks, raccoons, possums, and other vermin critters. Mama is restrained inside the 10x10 pen and baby, while squeezing thru the links on occasion, won't stray far from his mama.

When should I administer deworming medicine? Or should I even worry about that? What sort of things should I know now to anticipate the next stages of growth? I envision "Buddy", that's the IB chick's name, will free-range. Given he was born here, shouldn't he stay here when mama "weans" him?

When will Buddy be out of the woods regarding blackhead? 3 months? Buddy and mama walk on the bare ground, the dirt. Mommy helps him find bugs.

Anything else advice-wise I should know. Any criticisms are welcome. I'm learning and I want to give Buddy the best start I can.

I am getting peachicks next week for the first time and would like to hear some of these answers as well.

Congratulations on your hatch.
Please post some photos of your pretty when you can.
sense the wee pea is on the ground I would worm it now, most folks here myself included use safeguard for goats as it is the easiest and safest, we put 3 cc's per gallon of water but you can put 1 cc in a quart and it will not hurt the baby.. change it out everyday for 3 days with a fresh batch.
I do my babies every 2 months in the warm wet season here but every 3 months during dry times.

Blackhead I don't know much about, I know they can get it from an ameba or parasite from bugs and worms they eat and chickens can pass it to wee peas as they are notorious for eating poop.. mine love the goose poop every time I let them out to free range.

All my birds free range here the babies are put up at night still cause they range from 4 weeks to 3 months so I can't leave them all out at night without the little ones cause they are a flock now.

I will try to post photos. I need to learn how to do this. So let me understand. You began free ranging your baby at 4 weeks? I was thinking of free-ranging mine when baby was too old for mommy. Thoughts? I also thought about waiting 3 months too. What do you think?

Yea , the last few years i was waiting till they turned 4 months but sense i had such an age difference i decided to turn them all loose at the same time and it has worked out good so far, i do not have a predator problem in the safe zone and i have not seen any sign of illnesses so i think it was a wise choice because the brooder is getting pretty boaring.. for the older ones..

the good thing is they have learned to herd and i can get them all back in the brooder just by calling them .. bad thing is they will follow anything with 2 legs

I administered the Safeguard dewormer today. Man that stuff sure turns water milky doesn't it? I only did 2 cc's per gallon, as you told me, zaz. Getting two more 6x10 foot chainlink dog kennel panels to make the pen into a 10x20. Already bought some heavy duty 1 inch net mesh from Cutler gamebird supply to put over the top.

I hatched and raised my first chicken 37 years ago this week. I'm having the same feeling of awe and fun now raising my first peachick as I had then. Well, the mommy hen is doing that raising part. I just get to watch.

Mine all seemed to do fine once they hit 10 months.

Disclaimer: My blackhead experience is limited to five turkey poults and six peachicks from the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
