First Time Hatching Anyone With Me??

I have 3 that didn't absorb the yolk sac I THINK... I don't think they are going to make it.

well 2 aren't moving any more just breathing should I end their misery? I already took all the chicks that hatched out because they were really walking all over the 3 that weren't doing well.

waiting on one which pipped this am... then I think the rest are not going to hatch.

( I think I am buying an egg turner for next time... maybe I didn't turn them right??!)

i have a pip!! first one. just happened within the hour. nothing new yet, how long until i see progress? i dont want to worry if i shouldnt but i have no idea how long the whole process takes!!

Kind of like a labor coach....breath....in and out.... To all of you first time hatchers relax!!!

Not to interject to much but we have been there and we go pretty nuts too. But now 1000 chicks later we have learned breathing is important or you will turn blue.

For the chicks that did not fully suck in the sac- leave them alone, give them some time and sometimes they do make it.

For the person hatching bcm eggs- My black copper marans are ALWAYS the last to hatch pushing the 21 day mark. Give them another day.

Biggest secret- Stop opening it!!! Each time your incubator loses its temp and humidity which makes hatching tougher.

Chicks are amazingly resilient and sometimes are real survivors. Good luck and I hope you all get a ton of cute babies.

I have 13 FBCM eggs that I bought on Ebay and incubated. Of those 13, one pipped and started to zip last night. The chick zipped for about an hour but seemed to run out of steam. I watched the whole time, then I decided to go to bed and see what the progress was this morning. When I got up about 6 am the chick was still in the same position, no progress and obviously in distress. I took it out and removed the shell, which came off pretty easily since the chick had zipped about 1/2 the circumference anyway. The only thing was the yolk sac was not fully absorbed and there is a small red nub sticking out on the bottom of the chick with some strings holding the sac on. Maybe this is what everyone was referring to as the navel? Anyway, the chick flopped around and peeped and the yolk sac dried up and fell off within 10 minutes. The little red nub is still there but the chick seems to be doing well. I took the bigger chicks out and put them in the brooder because they were pecking the newborn.

I have to say I am sad that none of the other Marans eggs hatched. With all the opening and closing of the incubator, it seems pretty unlikely that I maintained the humidity, etc. I am going to add a bit of water and let the rest of the eggs sit until Sunday night, but I have a feeling the chicks developed but did not hatch. I guess I will know by Sunday evening, huh? It is really interesting how quickly and easily my EE chicks hatched, and how difficult the shipped eggs were to hatch. I am wondering if this is a Maran trait or a non shipped egg trait.
