First Time Hatching Anyone With Me??

Quote:
Yes as the saying goes, DONT. Sad but true!! My last one that hatched I thought was dead, because I didn't see any action at all and all the others had already hatched. Then at about 10:00pm last night it piped, and hatched at about 9:30 this morning. He was last but strong and healthy so far.

cinco is showing some (minute) progress
and i'm hopeful for a fifth chick in the morning

just read a post where someone had one chick at day 21
and more at day 24

my chicks want to be sprung from the incubator!

I just put mine in lockdown this morning. I set up a humidifier in the room blowing right on the top of the incubator and it is helping me keep the humidity up at 60%.

I will have to open briefly 2x a day to turn the silkie eggs in the carton. The carton make them quick to turn so I am not worried. the temp has only been about 99 since I jacked up the humidity. I put warm water in the humidifier to keep it up. I hope it's enough!

I am soooooooo glad to see and hear about everyone's babies hatching! It is hard to know when to step away from the incubator and let Mother Nature take over. We have 100% fertitity and I hope 100% can make it out. Tuesday morning should start the hatch. My husband is going to set up a time-lapse camera (I hope!) so we can record ALL of the details, good and bad, of our first hatch.

10 days after that our silkes are due to hatch. I just candled before lockdown and there was 100% fertility!!!!! Those awkward teenaged roosters know what they are doing! Whoo hoo! We have 8 silkie eggs and 2 from our tough-as-nails Polish hen. She free-ranges and sleeps in the spruce tree, and always used to hide her eggs, but ever since we got the silkies she has hung out with them (all bantams). She has recently shown an interest in their small ground-level coop, and started laying in there! So for sure we saw that and scooped up those eggs! She is old but they both are showing normal development!

This is so exciting! I'm soo glad I can share this with other like-minded chicken-folk!

Thanks, and good hatching!

Well all my chicks are out and it the incubator

8 out of 9 hatched. I can't ask for much better of a hatch rate. Last chick came hatched this morning. Poor little guy was pecked in the eye mercilessly by the other 2 chicks that were in there. The eye is swollen shut and the chick seems a little slow. I had him out and on a heating pad in my lap and he seemed to perk up a bit, yay.

Other than that they are healthy and eating/drinking.

I have to say that I am pretty satisfied with my first hatch. Other than I was really hoping that I would get a chick from my favorite hen Bertha who is a LF cochin, but the rooster mounts her sideways and backwards most of the time. I am thinking about trimming her rear end feathers, maybe that will help him out. So I have 8 Buff Orpington X Easter Egger chick

from you!!

kathryn: you did great, congratulations.

texascm, we're with you.

cinco is still in her shell, taking her time

five others show no signs of progress

i'm thinking that if i don't see any more pips, i'll take them all out after cinco comes out

then keep the bator going for a few more days. does that sound logical?

So I went to check the humidity this morning and quickly turn my silkie egg carton, and I heard..... PEEPING!!!!!!!!!!!!

Two of the eggs were definitely moving back and forth some. So now the wait begins... Of course I'm going to be out ALL DAY today. But my sister will be home to monitor the progress. How long until they hatch, I wonder? I am soo excited!

8 out of 9 is great!

Mo enters the world!!

I wanted to hear the peep, so I stuck a flex hose in the hatch box.
Mo responded to my voice.
It would zip everytime I quacked.

I became her hatching coach.

Mo...short for MOHAWK, because she was born with one.

After running all over the house last night, after my DS, Mo is finally asleep and egghausted.

Here is Mo all fluffed up.
She is going to have markings like a penguin. She is an Indian Runner, with a blue dad & a pied mom.
