First Time Hatching Anyone With Me??

Ok, I am bummed.

I went out and bought a new thermometer today with a humidity measure thingy to put into the incubator, and it was WILDLY different than the thermometer that came with the unit. The one I bought said 86 degrees! Yikes. Then I freaked out and put in a 3rd thermometer and got yet another reading. Apparently the thermometer I bought was bad, not the incubator, but I did find out one new thing. Seems that if the thermometer lays on top of the eggs, it is 99.5 degrees but if it lays next to them it is 95 degrees. Now I know why people have those expensive incubators and blowers.

So, now I wonder if I killed my expensive eggs.

I got a pip!! 20 minutes ago! No action since but I was so close to tears when I saw it, not sure if I can handle a new development so soon!! I am so egg-cited!!

Im in but i probably wont incubate until the end of march. i have a small styrafoam hoime made incubator with a 30 watt curly light bulb and a bowl with a sponge and water in it. the temperature reads exactly 100 degrees in it and it can hold about 16 eggs. i barely made it 2 days ago. i dont know what the humidity is though.

I am keeping the thermometer that is on top of the eggs at about 101.5 and the coolest one says 95 n the side

but I am dealing with a still air and from what I have read this is normal. So dont loose hope!!

First one made it out by 11pm and had some yolk still to be absorbed and some droplets of blood. But that dried and fell off by this morning. Second chickie hatched about 9am and the kids got to watch! Doing great so far, no yolk or anything. 2rd one has pipped but seems to be having a harder time getting going. I can see its little beak and he is opening and closing it by the hole..I hope he's not distressed. The other two are still in the incubator and their fur is stuck to their back. Not sure when I am going to get them out...I want to soon but worried that the little one still trying to hatch will be affected badly. What do ya'll think?

Kathryn, what kind of eggs do you have? White? Mine are brown, I am so jealous you are seeing development! I can hardly see anything.

Thanks for the temp info..... you made me feel better!
