First Time Hatching Anyone With Me??

hi Martha

i used a hovabator genesis 1602n which i added a fan to on day seven.

there were ten bbs orpington eggs that came to vermont from tennessee.

i had a power outage on day one, then some bumps in temperature (always too low, never too high) until i moved the incubator and added the fan.

four hatched great, one i helped out and that one is struggling, the remaining five i still have in the incubator but don't have much hope for.

there are at least sixteen more eggs that should be here to try for round two.

how about you, are you ready?

As ready as I'll ever be! Nervous, but excited. I used an LG with fan and turner for the first 18 days and now they're in the 1588. OMG I have had to babysit the LG like you wouldn't believe. When I candled my eggs at lockdown, some were full of chicks and some were still very "liquid." I'm pretty sure those are quitters but I put them in the hatcher anyway. This is my first time and I want to give every egg a change, if you know what I mean. Ha! I've ordered another 1588 and it should be here tomorrow. I'm going to ditch the LG (actually give it back to my niece) and go with the Hovabators. I know the Brinsea is very highly rated but it just doesn't hold enough eggs for me. I'll keep you posted on my progress.
As far as your hatch is concerned...I've been reading about shipped eggs and if you get 50% you've done good. Hopefully you'll have better luck with this second batch. I'm collecting my own eggs for another round myself. We're addicts!!!

I picked up 8 silkie eggs and a mix of a dozen others (RIR, EE, orpingtons and maybe a couple others)... so onto to try to starting tomorrow or the next day...

Fabulous pictures, Jan! Thanks for sharing. I LOVE the pictures. I have the same incubator as you. I'm about to set my first batch of eggs at the end of the month. Any advice?

i am on day 7 of my first incubation. we have 24 mixed eggs, some arucanas, and when we candled last night i think i only had 5 or 6 developing. i have struggled with temp reg, as the them was on the rack under the turner for a few days and I discovered the temp on top of the eggs was too high. now i have it as 99.5 on top of the eggs. hard to find a well calibrated thermometer, they are all diff temps, too.

First timer -- purchased 24 variety eggs yesterday from local farm. Have 2 hens in the house recouping from a dog attack. Figured I'd take advantage of the broody behavior. My BO is currently sitting on 14 of the eggs and has the remaining 10 beside her. The Comet wasn't interested in nesting.
Whereas the eggs were fresh yesterday I know I have a small window to set up a incubator.
We have the styrofoam, glass, tape, aquarium thermometer, crate. But I'm not finding enough directions to guide me any further.
How do I monitor humidity? I am doing a still air set up.
I'm feverishly looking for links to guide me, knowing I've got a window closing on time here.
Any expierenced readers browsing this post?

You'll need to by a hygrometer (which measures humidity percentage) and then calibrate it using the "salt water" method. It's easy to do but takes 8-10 hours to calibrate. My experience is that most hygrometers you can purchase locally are off so you need to calibrate. If you do a search on this site you'll find the instructions. But first, find the hygrometer....Good luck!
