First time hatching. Does this look right?

Sorry to hear :(

Unfortunately, there’s really nothing you can do right now but wait. This period is a quiet but critical one where the last bit of yolk is being absorbed and the blood vessels recede. There’s not much you can do to help until that process is done.

The good news is, the chick has full access to air, and has the luxury to take its time for the final preparations.

When the chick is ready, it will chirp and struggle to make that final zip and pop out of the shell.

In my first hatch I had one pip completely on the wrong end. I was biting my nails the whole time, waiting for the moment I would need to step in and help it out. It turns out I didn’t need to worry at all, she hatched herself just fine :)

Oh, and if the pip missed the airsac, the chick will need up to 48 hours to hatch due to making a simultaneous internal and external pip!
Thank you! I’m going to go to bed pretty soon and see what it looks like in the morning. Again, if it hatches ok, do you think I can put it with chicks 4 days older than it?

I’d check as soon as it hits the 24 hour mark. It looks as if it’s progressed pretty far so at that point if it’s not progressed by 24 hours, assist.

I havent had personal experience with putting a day old chick with older ones. In my experience, they are much more mobile about 2 days in. I would think you would risk the youngest one being trampled on the first two days. But maybe I’m wrong and it will be completely okay, I would wait for someone with more experience to chime in :)

I completely agree. Once the younger chick escapes its shell, it needs at Least 24 hours to rest and recover from hatching. It will then become much more mobile. I have put chicks aged 2-3 days old in with week-old chicks many times and with no problems. But the key is the younger chick needs to be completely mobile before being added to the older chicks, or it risks being trampled.

Nothing in your picture looks worrying to me at the moment. This chick pipped a large hole, so it is easy to watch the beak. If the chick is acting like it is swallowing, it is still absorbing the yolk.

As long as you can see it is still breathing I like to wait. I do tend to assist more than most, but then I raise critically endangered Chickens, so every live hatch is a step in the right direction of saving the breed.

How is it progressing this morning?

things you might want to get to have on hand if you do need to intervene.

small kids paint brush to use to tease the membrane and apply coconut oil.
Coconut oil or olive oil can be used as can Neosporin WITHOUT pain relief.

The picture shows the chick is positioned to pick up and start to zip nicely.

Thanks for responding! It hatched overnight.
