First time hatching from my own flock

The last egg is finally zipping! Glad it waiting till after I got home from work. Better get my fill of the excitement now or I’ll have to wait till next year.

Should look about like its sibling. Curious to know why the bresse’s chicks all have that darker yellow patch on their necks. Red leakage? No idea.

Are bresses dominant white? Is that why the one chick looks paint? I’d like to know about the yellow color too - with my chicks, I had some that hatched out paint with that yellow patch and they have autosomal red, which makes them look like “dirty paint.” Someone else on here IDed it as autosomal red but I haven’t been able to find any additional info about it.

I think there are strains of dominant and recessive white bresse. I did some reading on them not too long ago but I forget which ones are the more desirable. One throws dirty chicks while the other has more of the pure solid light yellow down. I would guess my bresse is dominant seeing as all her chicks are white but I only hatched 3 of her eggs so I can’t say for sure with such a small sample group.

The large fowl mix who gave me 4 chicks is also white but has a few black and grey feathers, she hatched from the same eggs as the bresse so I would assume she is part bresse herself. 2 of her chicks are more of that pure light yellow, one is blue and one is black and white.

Recessive white cannot have any dark feathers so your Bresse is probably carrying 2 dominant white genes - so all of her offspring would receive one dominant white gene from her. However I do believe that it is possible for a bird to carry recessive white and dominant white.

The hen that hatched out of the Bresse egg with a few dark feathers carries one dominant white gene. Possibly a recessive white gene as well. So if her and the male both carry recessive white, it is possible for her to have recessive white babies. But also the two white babies that she hatched could be paint (1 copy of dominant white just like the mom.) The two that aren’t white didn’t receive the dominant white gene (nor two copies of the recessive white gene)

If the white babies grow in solid white feathers without a single other colored feather then they are recessive white. If they have any other color popping through then they have one copy of the dominant white gene.

Hopefully that makes sense, and maybe you already knew all of that! You could test breed the Bresse and her daughter to try and determine what they are. Or maybe The Silkie Lab has a recessive white test. I think if not right now, she will have one soon that you could test them for if you are really curious.
